The president of the Catalan Government, Artur Mas, says in an interview that, as a private citizen, he will vote yes to independence in the November 9th referendum, and that as a politician, he will do everything possible to guarantee that “the population can express its opinion, despite Madrid’s boycott”. He made these declarations to the Italian wire service ANSAmed, which focuses on Mediterranean news. Mas says that he considers himself to be “the leader of the referendum” rather than “the leader of Catalan independence”. At the same time, he insisted that he is not worried about fitting Catalonia into Spain, saying that “pragmatism and common sense will prevail”. The service also interviewed Oriol Pujol (CiU), Quim Arrufat (CUP) and Jordi Solé (ERC). Finally, he said he wasn’t rooting for Spain in the World Cup because “‘I don’t have time for these things”.

Mas told ANSAmed that he considered himself to be the ”leader of the referendum”, rather than the ”leader of Catalan independence”. If the region succeeds in becoming independent, the Catalan leader is not worried that it will be expelled from the EU.
