Despite Juan Carlos being nominated by the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco, (see this video of the day that he swore allegiance to his successor), many newspapers now omit this essential episode of his past when they show a retrospective of his life in images. Many papers don’t ever include pictures in which the two appear together.

In these two collections of photos in El País, for example, there is just a single photo in which he salutes Franco, but it is the twenty-ninth of the second gallery. In the gallery published by ABC they don’t include any at all in which Franco appear. In El Mundo they do show a picture of Juan Carlos with Franco on the front page, but it is used to illustrate an article by Victoria Prego titled “The best king in our history”. In this same newspaper, there is a photo in this gallery. In La Vanguardia there is no photograph in which the king and dictator appear together.

On the internet, in contrast, there are many images of Franco and his successor. Here is a sampling:

[What a sweet picture!]

[Epic moment in Juan Carlos I struggle for democracy]

“To Generalísimo Franco, with much affection and the utmost respect.” And a little bird in the background.

[Yep, this is our king with the Franco himself, a great example to follow, no?]

[The Bourbon father was Franco’s candidate, and the Bourbon son is the candidate of the IBEX and the economic oligarchy.]
