The five schools affected by the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) that imposed that 25% of the classes be taught in Spanish will not follow the ruling just yet. Today was ostensibly the deadline—one month after the rulings—but the Catalan Department of Education says that the deadline isn’t until June 16. That is how the five schools will follow the Generalitat’s directives, and for the moment, ignore the imposition of the TSJC.

The Department of Education appealed the TSJC ruling to the Spanish Supreme Court, which was published in January, and which imposed that 25% of subjects be taught in Spanish in some classrooms in five schools in Catalonia.

The department interprets that the deadline for applying these measures begins one month after filing the appeal, on June 16, and not today, June 2, which is a month after the TSJC communicated the ruling to the parties involved.

Keeping in mind that the school year ends June 20, the days in which the new language distribution will be applied are days during which there are evaluations and the students spend their time in extracurricular activities. In other words, in practice, the rulings will not be applied this term.

The Christian School Foundation of Catalonia, to which four of the affected schools belong, explained that the directors of their schools are following the directives of the department and therefore will not apply the order today, but rather on June 16.
