Spain’s Foreign Affairs Minister, José Manuel García-Margallo, appeared this afternoon in the Spanish Congress to explain the 200 page document that he sent to Spanish embassies with arguments against Catalonia’s referendum on independence. Margallo explained his sending the document by saying that he was protecting the Catalan people from the Catalan Government’s sovereignty process. Speaking against the referendum, Margallo said that ‘an independent Catalonia would only be possible through a unilateral declaration’.

The MP from the Catalan Republican Left party, Joan Tardà critized the report against Catalonia’s independence. According to Tardà, the report tries to ‘belittle and subvert the will of the citizens of Catalonia to democratically exercise their right to decide’.

Tardà gave Margallo a Spanish copy of ‘Catalunya Calling. The World Has to Know“, recently published by Sàpiens magazine, as a reply to the report created by the Spanish Foreign Minister.
