F.C. Barcelona player Gerard Piqué has publicly expressed his support for the self-determination consultation vote on the 9th of November. At the press conference before the Champions League match between Barça and APOEL Nicosia, Piqué explained the reasons why he took part in the giant V in Barcelona last Thursday, the Catalona National Day. ‘I participate in the demostration because I am Catalan and it was the festivity of Catalonia. I went there with my family and friends and I enjoyed the day and I had a good time. It was a remarkable day because of the great amount of people that was there and also because of the festive atmosphere. And he added: ‘I am in favour of the self-determination consulation. I thinkthat it’s a democratic fact and it has to happen. The people have the right to vote’.
Piqué received criticism and insults on social networks after tweeting two pictures with his son on the demonstration. ‘I do not understand why people relates the fact that I feel Catalan and I am in favour of the consultation, with my role in the Spanish national team. I always battle hard when I played there.’
