The 3rd edition of Big Data Week debuted Monday in Barcelona as well as more than thirty other cities worldwide as the largest crowd-sourced festival of events, meet-ups, workshops and hackathons focused on the social, political, technological and commercial impacts of data. It will bring together an anticipated 30,000 data practitioners across in 200+ events.

Big Data Week is a platform for thousands of data scientists, data technologists, data visualizers and leaders from the business, not-for-profit and governments sectors to share how big data is impacting their organizations.

The 3rd Edition of Big Data Week will focus on “The Connected Society”, exploring the relationship of data across The Internet of Things, Smart Cities, and The Quantified Self.

Some of the topics to be covered in Barcelona are “Data in scientific research” and “Big Data and Smart Cities” on May 6, “Big Data and Health: Opportunities and Challenges” and “Big Data and Retail” on May 7 (in English), Hackathon Big Data Week on May 9, and the Intro Course to Open Data (2nd edition) on May 12.

“Big data has gone from a buzz word to a business reality. Now is the moment to learn from each other to advance the art and science of harnessing data to benefit all aspects of society,” said Kenneth Cukier, a co-author of the book ‘BigData: A Revolution That Will Transform How We Live, Work, and Think’ and the data editor at The Economist.

Other participating cities include Atlanta, Chicago, Dubai, Istanbul, Belfast, Perth, Berlin, London and Lagos. Co-founder Stewart Townsend (@stewarttownsend) said “I founded Big Data Week to bring together communities of like-minded individuals who share passion for data. Over the past 18 months, the festival has expanded across four continents and the number of events has quadrupled.”
