The public policy of Alberto Fabra’s government in Valencia, his scorn and aggression toward the language, the closure of Valencian public television and radio and the elimination of broadcasts from Catalonia have been the last straws for a good portion of the Valencian people. They have organized and come together. They held their first event on Friday evening, simultaneously in Castelló and Valencia to demand that the executive resign and call early elections.

‘The PP has brought the country to an absolutely unbearable situation. We can’t be silent. Valencian society is up in arms,’ Rosa Solbes, the movement’s spokesperson, told VilaWeb. After denouncing the ‘huge democratic deficit in public debate and in the parliament’ she added, ‘They have an absolute, or rather, an absolutist majority, but they govern for the minority.’

The joint event was called by thirty organizations, including the opposition parties (Compromís, EUPV, PSPV-PSOE), cultural groups like ACPV and Micalet; unions like UGT, CCOO and the Intersindical; Escola Valenciana (Valencian Schools), the PAH (anti-evictions group), and Salvem el Cabanyal (neighborhood group), and diverse associations like the Coordinadora de Discapacitats (Disabled persons Coordinator), and the Plataforma per l’Ensenyament Públic (Platform for Public Education).

Demonstrators put out a call so that at 7pm everyone would show—symbolically—a ‘red card’ to Alberto Fabra. (A ‘red card’ in soccer means that the player has committed an egregious foul and must be expelled from the game.) It was the first joint event organized by the majority of the political and civil opposition and the organizers hope it is the first of many.
