Three Catalan musical groups—Txarango, Mishima and the DJ Headbirds—performed today in New York City’s Central Park as part of the SummerStage Festival. The concert, organized in collaboration with the Institut Ramon Llull (IRL’s), brought the groups to perform in one of the most popular stages on the international scene, in front of about 3000 spectators.
The program, called Catalan Sounds on Tour, forms part of the IRL’s strategy for offering international support to Catalan musicians. The first group to perform was Headbirds, at 3pm, followed by Mishima, and finally by Txarango around 5:30pm.
Fans danced and sang through each of the performances. The SummerStage Festival, organized by the City Parks Foundation, offers a program of high-quality free performances from July to September in various parks throughout the city, but mostly in Central Park, and specifically in Rumsey Playfield.
SummerStage’s goal is to help the diverse communities in New York get to know the wide range of cultures throughout the world, through both traditional and contemporary performances. The activities, that take place outside, are open and accessible to people of all ages and origins.
This year, the IRL participated in the festival for the first time and organized Catalan Sounds on Tour. This collaboration comes after the IRL invited the SummerStage Festival artistic director Erika Elliott to the Mercat de Música Viva in Vic and FiraTàrrega last year so that she could get a taste of the Catalan music scene.
Sunday evening, yet another Catalan musician performed in New York as Clara Sanabras presented her latest work “El vol dispers” at a show in Joe’s Pub.
