“Leaders of the PP have asked the Ministry of Justice through the Prosecutor’s Office to study the possibility of illegalizing the ANC,” revealed José Antich, journalist and former director of Barcelona-based daily La Vanguardia, in a radio program on RAC-1. But why would they want to illegalize it? According to Antich, “There are some people, and they’ve already cited the example of Girauta, who say that [the ANC] is instigating a coup d’état in Catalonia. These are very common opinions in Madrid. I have the impression that in Madrid they’ve completely lost their perspective of what’s going on here, in Catalonia. Maybe they’re capable of understanding the case of Crimea and Ukraine, but they’re not able to understand the case in Catalonia.”

The ANC, or Catalan National Assembly, is a civic organization that advocates for the independence of Catalonia through strictly peaceful, democratic means.

ABC, a Madrid daily, said in an editorial Sunday that the ANC was preparing a coup d’état based on the ANC’s road map which states that harbors and airports will have to be secured after independence is declared.
