In 1830, terminally ill Josep Vidal prayed to Saint Medir and swore that if he were cured, he would make an annual trip to the Saint’s hermitage, and would tell everyone he knew about the Saint’s kindness. He lived in the small town of Gràcia (now part of Barcelona) and the hermitage was in Sant Cugat, just six miles away. The pilgrimage was not difficult—and to make sure everyone found out about it, he decided to bring candy to hand out along the way.
Almost two hundred years later, the tradition remains, and this year 26 separate Sant Medir clubs will recreate Vidal’s trip, like he did, on horseback. This year, they will distribute 40 tons of caramels.
