![]() > Legendary Origins > Why 42.195 Kilometers? > The Coldest Marathon in the World dilluns, 3 de novembre de 2003
The marathon is the most legendary of athletic races and probably the toughest among all competitions. 42 kilometers and 195 meters: this is the distance that these long-suffering athletes have to run before reaching the finish-line. And obviously, they must run this distance in the shortest time possible and without stopping, not even for an instant.
Therefore, a marathon runner must possess a high level of physical resistance, something that can only be attained through hours and hours of daily training. And that's not all: he or she must also possess a substantial degree of mental preparation, which will allow the runner to control him or herself when the going gets tough, an inevitable part of such a long and even heroic race. We view the marathon as, basically, an athletic discipline that the runner confronts alone. This is different from what occurs in team sports competitions, where each member or player has a specific function and relies on the support of the entire group. Nevertheless, the fact remains that the marathon is a very popular race, contested in high-level athletic competitions, at the national, continental or international level. It is also one of the most emblematic races of the Olympic Games. Furthermore, there are a great many cities scattered throughout the world where mass marathons are organized year after year. Two of the most popular are the Boston and New York Marathons, in the United States. In fact, just this past November 2nd, the streets of New York were the scene of the 34th annual edition of the race.
Legendary OriginsThere is a legend that says that in the year 490BC, during what are known as the Persian Wars (when Greeks cities were at war with the Persian Empire); a Greek messenger named Pheidippides ran the distance between the two cities of Marathon and Athens, totaling about forty kilometers. The legend says that Pheidippides was sent to announce the defeat of the Persian armies at the hands of the Greeks in Marathon, as well as tell the army not to surrender to the Persian fleet. Pheidippides, arriving exhausted at his destination, the Acropolis in Athens, is said to have pronounced just a single word before dying as a result of his great effort: Nike (victory in Greek). In memory of Pheidippides' heroism, when the first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in Athens in 1896, athletes also competed in the first marathon, run just as Pheidippides once had done, between Marathon and Athens.
Why 42.195 Kilometers?![]()
+ In the 1908 Olympic Games the course started at Windsor Castle.
The reason why the distance of a marathon is calculated as being precisely 42.195 kilometers is not for it being the exact distance between Marathon and Athens. Actually, this distance was run for the first time during the 1908 Olympic Games, which were held in London. Apparently Queen Alexandra wanted the race to be extended a total of one hundred and fifty meters, so as to allow the British Royal Family to have a better view without having to leave Windsor Castle, from where the race was eventually begun. A royal whim for a legendary race…
The Coldest Marathon in the World![]()
+ The Antarctic Marathon is the coldest race in the world.
The marathon is such a popular race that it is even celebrated in the most incredible locations, such as…Antarctica! That's right, only a few years ago, a small yet very daring number of runners participated in the Antarctic Marathon, organized by Marathon Tours & Travel and Peregrine Adventures of Australia. This year's race was held on King George Island, the most extensive of the South Shetland Islands, located north of the Antarctic Peninsula, boasting temperatures that we wouldn't exactly be able to qualify as tropical. One thing is certain, the one hundred and sixteen participants were able to enjoy a wonderful trip aboard the Peregrine Mariner, the ship that took them to the point of departure after having passed through Beagle Canal and Drake Straight, the site where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans come together and create waves of substantial height.
