As you must surely already know, Formula 1 is the most spectacular and popular race car competition in the world. Beginning with its first competition in 1950, there have been many drivers who have had their names added to the Champions list, some even on more than one occasion. And yet it hasn't been until now that anyone has achieved being able to proclaim himself Champion a total of six times. Not until this year's victory of German driver Michael Schumacher has anyone achieved such an unimaginable feat.
In fact, Schumacher has outdone five-time Argentinean champion Juan Manuel Fangio, winner for the years 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957, who for many years held the Titles record. The German driver's 2003 victory can be added to those already achieved in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001 and 2002. In other words, six F1 titles that put him at the top of a sport that is followed by millions of fans all over the world. Without a doubt, this year, Schumacher has had to give 110% of himself in order to achieve his victory, maintaining a tough neck in neck till the very end with Finish driver Kimi Räikkönen, who he just barely managed to overcome. And yet we should keep in mind that Formula 1 racing is becoming more and more competitive, resulting in that the differences between cars are ever-increasingly less apparent. What's more, in order to achieve the prized title of F1 World Champion, not only does the driver have to be very fast; he also has to drive with intelligence and display a notable resistance on the physical side. We mustn't forget that the Formula 1 race consists of a total of sixteen races, known as Gran Prix, battled out every two weeks for almost seven months.
Schumacher's GoalsExperts indicate that Michael Schumacher is a very calculating and cold-blooded man who makes few errors and is aware of what he must do at every given moment. And if we recall the German driver's very successful results, it's likely that they were right on the mark. Successfully attaining six titles is the greatest proof of the fact that Schumacher is a driver whose talents put him in a class of his own. And that's without taking into account the records he's achieved in the past twelve years that he has been competing in Formula 1. Schumacher is the driver who has won the most Gran Prixs, holding seventy in total. He also holds the record for the greatest number of victories in a single year, eleven, and is the driver having stepped up on the podium on the greatest number of occasions, something reserved for the top three drivers in a particular race.
Great DriversApart from Schumacher and Fangio, the history of Formula 1 is replete with exceptional champions who have caused spectators to stir with their spectacular way of driving. Certainly, the most recent of these drivers is Brazil native Ayrton Senna, who unfortunately died in 1994 as a result of a fatal accident. Even today, Senna continues to hold the 'pole positions' record, meaning, the number of times a driver begins the race in first position at the starting gate. Senna's duels with French driver Alain Prost are remembered as being among the most spectacular in the history of Formula 1 racing. After Schumacher and Fangio, Prost happens to be the driver with the greatest number of F1 World Champion titles, being four. Among those who have managed on three occasions are: Australian Jack Brabham, British driver Jackie Stewart, Nelson Piquet of Brazil, Astrian Niki Lauda and Ayrton Senna himself.
The Teams![]()
+ Ferrari, one of the most mythical makes among Formula 1 cars.
Formula 1 isn't just all about drivers. There are also teams. The Constructors World Championships, as the team competition is known, features the participation of the most prestigious makes of cars the world over, with two drivers per car. The Constructors title goes to the team who achieves the greatest number of point over the entire duration of the competition, in other words, the team having the greatest number of points among its drivers. This year, for example, the winner was the Italian Ferrari auto-racing team, to which both Michael Schumacher and Brazil native Rubens Barrichello belong. Ferrari is one of the most mythical makes among Formula 1 cars, and has received the team championship title each of the last five years. Worth noting among other leading makes of racecars today are Williams BMW, McLaren Mercedes and Renault.
