100 Most Endangered Cultural Heritage Sites

Endangered Sites in Europe

…the Americas…

…Asia, the Near East and Africa

dimarts, 14 d'octubre de 2003
'Every day, in every corner of the world, works of great beauty and importance are being lost forever'. This forceful statement appears at the top of World Monuments Fund (WMF) web site. Founded in 1965, the WMF is a private organization devoted to the conservation of world heritage. This past September 24th, from its headquarters in New York, the institution presented its list of 100 Most Endangered Sites on the planet.

First appearing in 1996, this list is compiled every two years by a group of experts using information submitted by governments, organizations and individuals devoted to cultural preservation. The sites nominated are not limited to a particular historical period, but rather include any piece of significant value that is endangered, regardless of its age.

This year the list includes a number of artistic and architectural works from around the world: nine works from Africa; thirty-one from the Americas; fourteen from Asia; thirty-three from Europe; eleven from the Near East; one from Oceania, as well as the inclusion of the first site from Antarctica.

If we take a look at the list, we might be surprised to note that there is a lack of endangered works of international fame. And yet the list does include a number of lesser-known sites. According to Fund organizers, this is due to the fact that many of the more popular and valuable works benefit from government protection of the countries to which these works belong. In this manner, the World Monuments Fund list provides a complement to other organizations, such as UNESCO, for example.

Endangered Sites in Europe

According to the World Monuments Fund, Europe is the continent with the greatest number of imperiled works of art and architecture. This is paradoxical, given the fact that the European continent has a long solid history of democratic tradition. And yet, we must bear in mind that this democratic tradition was founded by way of a price paid through many bloody battles. Nor should we disregard the truly ancient history of what is appropriately referred to as the Old Continent, which has provided humanity with innumerable works. Whatever the case, particular noteworthy among endangered European works are: Poland's Old Lublin Theatre; the archaeological remains of the Port of Trajan, in the epithetical area of Portus in Ancient Rome (Italy); the Roman Villa of Rabaçal (Portugal); and the Archaeological Site of Ephesus, in present-day Turkey.

…the Americas…

+ The Lower Manhattan, an endangered cultural site.
As concerns the American continent, the World Monuments Fund has indicated Central and South America as the regions with the highest number of endangered cultural sites. For example, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay contain the imperiled vestiges of the Guarani culture and the cultural and architectural traces of the Society of Jesus missions established there at the end of the 17th century. In Brazil, the Franciscan Convent of Olinda, the first convent built by this mendicant order in this vast country, is also endangered. And yet, the list also includes locations belonging to the North-American subcontinent, such as Lower Manhattan, New York (USA). This area, settled in 1626 by Dutch merchants, contains a wealth of cultural heritage that ought not to be left to ruin.

…Asia, the Near East and Africa

+ The Great Wall of China, one of the most internationally well-known monuments.
The same should also be said about the African and Asian continents. The Asian list includes one of the most internationally well-known monuments: the Great Wall of China, more than 6,500 kilometers long, which was begun between the 7th and 8th centuries BC. India is also a region that has suffered greatly, with four highly endangered areas including Dalhousie Square in Calcutta, which served as the political and economic centre of the British Empire in the Indian subcontinent from the 18th to the 19th century. In the Near East, there are many sites in Palestine, Syria and Iraq that are equally worse for wear. Iraq, for example, has been terribly devastated by the war and the Assyrian Palaces of Nineveh and Nimrud are facing serious ruin. The social, political and economic difficulties in Africa are apparent in the cultural field. Included among the many endangered sites is the Mortuary Temple of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, in Luxor (Egypt).
