Cesc's Arsenal

Captain Cesc Fàbregas

Like Barça, Arsenal play an attacking game

A legend in European football

dimarts, 23 de març de 2010
The Champions League is already at the quarter-final stage and fate has seen FC Barcelona drawn against the London team, Arsenal, an old acquaintance with which the club has many things in common, led by the Catalan midfielder Cesc Fàbregas.

The teams' reputations and the fact that they are a joy to watch mean that Arsenal-Barça is undoubtedly the most interesting of the quarter-final matches.

Added to this are a couple of sentimental factors. Number one is Thierry Henry, a key player in Arsenal's history, who now wears a Barça jersey. Number two is Cesc, the Arsenal captain who learned his football with FC Barcelona and who may return to the Catalan club at the end of the season (a possibility the media have been discussing for some time).

Then there is the fact that Barça and Arsenal have not met since the 2006 Champions League final, which Barça won 2-1 in the dying minutes of the match.

Like the 2006 match, this Barça-Arsenal encounter is set to be a fiercely fought contest. The Catalan side will have the advantage of playing the second leg at the Camp Nou on 6 April, after having done everything they can to get a good result on 30 March at Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, which was inaugurated in 2006 and has a capacity of 60,000.

Captain Cesc Fàbregas

+ Cesc has scored 15 goals in the English league this season.
Francesc Fàbregas Soler is the Arsenal captain and the side's key figure. Cesc is from Arenys de Mar and trained as a junior at FC Barcelona. However, he never played for the club's first team before being signed by Arsenal in 2003, aged 16. A midfielder with a superb technique and a great vision of the game, Fàbregas is the 'brain' of the London side, playing a role similar to that of Xavi at Barça. He has scored 15 goals in the English league this season, more than any other Arsenal player… and he's not even a forward!

Like Barça, Arsenal play an attacking game

+ Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger.
Like Barça, Arsenal is a team that plays offensive football based on ball possession. According to the experts, these two teams play the most attractive football in Europe. Arsenal's attacking style comes from the Frenchman Arsène Wenger, who has been the club's manager for the last 15 years. For Wenger, winning is not enough; the team must also play well. This point of view is shared by the much-lauded Barça manager, Josep Guardiola.

A legend in European football

+ Arsenal lost to Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final.
Founded in 1886, 13 years before Barça, Arsenal is a legendary team in English and European football. They have won the English league 13 times, behind only Liverpool and Manchester United, with 18 wins each. Arsenal have yet to win the Champions League. They came close in 2006, but victory was snatched from them by two goals from Barça in the final minutes of the match (one from Samuel Eto'o and the other from Juliano Belletti). Now they will have the opportunity to make up for that disappointing defeat.
