Barça: The Countdown Begins

FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, the Clubs with the Most Cup Titles

A Team that's Breaking all Records

Going for their Third Champions League Title on 27 May

dimarts, 12 de maig de 2009
They say that this is the best Barça ever, that it plays the finest football. The team coached by Josep Guardiola is receiving praise from all quarters, even though it has still not won a single title. However, this week it stands the chance of winning two: Copa (Cup) and the Spanish League (La Liga); and then in two weeks, the most prized of all, the Champions League.

Everything was pointing to FC Barcelona winning its 19th League title on Sunday. Fans packed the Camp Nou, confident of a victory that would give it the League title. However, opponents Vila-real drew the match 3-3 in the closing minutes.

Nonetheless, with three match days to go before the final, FC Barcelona have an eight-point advantage over second-place Real Madrid. If Madrid fails to win on Saturday, FC Barcelona will automatically win the League but if Real Madrid wins, Barça will need to draw against Majorca. The Spanish League title is almost in their pocket. It seems to be just a question of time.

In fact, the worst news of the day was not the result but the injury to Andrés Iniesta, one of the key players in the team and the scorer of the historic tie goal against Chelsea in the match that took FC Barcelona to the Champions League final.

Doctors are confident that both Iniesta and Thierry Henry (who, prior to injury, was one of the team's top shape players) will be fit for the Champions League final. One thing is certain: neither of the two will play in tomorrow's Cup final in Valencia. Two other players who will not play are Rafa Márquez (injured) and Éric Abidal after the red card he received against Vila-real.

FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao, the Clubs with the Most Cup Titles

+ FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao have won the Cup 24 times.
The Cup final will be between FC Barcelona and Bilbao's Athletic Club, who will each have 18,000 fans cheering them on in the final. The great symbol of Basque Country football, Athletic's sporting philosophy is based on developing home-grown players. Interestingly, both FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao have won the Cup 24 times, more than any other club. Needless to say, if Barça wins, they will enter the last stage of the season with renewed enthusiasm.

A Team that's Breaking all Records

+ Barcelona head coach Pep Guardiola.
Playing offensive, one-touch football based on ball possession, Guardiola's Barça is about to beat all Spanish League records, even though there are still three match days left. They already have 86 points, more than any other team in the history of the League. They have scored 103 goals, four less than the record set by Madrid in the 1989-1990 season. Samuel Eto'o is the highest scorer in the League, with 28 goals, and Víctor Valdés the goalkeeper who has conceded the least number of goals (31).

Going for their Third Champions League Title on 27 May

+ Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
On 27 May in Rome, FC Barcelona will play their 6th Champions League final, a championship they have won twice, in 1992 and 2006. Their opponents will be a legendary team in the history of European football: Manchester United, the winners of three Champions League finals including last year. The FC Barcelona-Manchester United final, the contest of choice for many football fans, will feature Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, considered the best two players in the world.
