Handel, a Cosmopolitan Musician

The Child who Hid Himself Away to Play

The 'Messiah'

Handel, Bach and the Baroque

dimarts, 28 d'abril de 2009
This April marks the 250th anniversary of the death of the composer George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), considered to be not only one of the greatest musicians of the Baroque period, but also of the whole of Western music.

The anniversary will, of course, have special significance in Germany, particularly in Halle, the city where Handel was born, and where a festival in his honour has been held since 1922. However, it will also have significance in England, where the composer spent most of his adult life, and where he was granted British citizenship in 1727.

Therefore, it is not surprising that the Handel House Museum in London, located in the house where Handel spent the last 36 years of his life, has a whole programme of commemorative events lined up. One highlight is the 'Handel Reveal'd' exhibition, which focuses on the more human side of the composer: his businesses, his love life, his gluttony, the blindness that affected him in the last years of his life, etc.

It should be said, however, that Handel is not just associated with Germany and England. He was a cosmopolitan man with an open spirit who enriched himself with the traditions of other countries. For example, he spent four years (1706-1710) in Italy, the centre of music in Europe at the time.

His musical legacy is universal and includes more than 600 pieces of various genres: operas, oratorios, cantatas, serenatas, instrumental music, etc.

The Child who Hid Himself Away to Play

+ Portrait of George Frideric Handel, by B. Denner.
Although George Frideric Handel displayed great musical talent from a very early age, his father wanted him to have a career in law. To satisfy his passion for music, it is said that he managed to bring a clavichord into the house and to hide himself away to play it without anyone noticing, thanks to the instrument's soft sound. In the end, however, his father, a well-respected barber-surgeon, became convinced of George's abilities and the boy started music lessons when he was seven or eight.

The 'Messiah'

+ Handel composed the 'Messiah' in twenty-four days.
Amongst the many pieces composed by Handel is the 'Messiah', the most popular oratorio (a musical drama with a religious theme) of all time. First performed in Dublin (Ireland) on 9 April 1742, the highlight of the piece is the triumphant 'Hallelujah Chorus'. It is said that King George II of England was so moved when he heard the 'Hallelujah Chorus' for the first time that he rose to his feet. Even today, in many parts of the world (especially in England) the audience stands to listen to the chorus.

Handel, Bach and the Baroque

+ The house where Handel was born.
Handel is a notable representative of the Baroque, an artistic style that predominated in Europe from the end of the 16th century until the middle of the 18th century. The period produced another giant of classical music: Johann Sebastian Bach. Like Handel, Bach was also German and was born less than a month after Handel. However, his life was more sedentary and he travelled less than the composer of the 'Messiah'.

QUE HO SABIES?

  • It took Handel very little time to compose the 'Messiah': twenty-four days.
  • This year, one of the most well-known Catalan musicians in the international arena, Jordi Savall, from Igualada, has been honoured with the George Frideric Handel award by the city of Halle for his performance work and for his work in bringing Handel's music to a wide audience.
