Joaquim Sorolla: Success at the MNAC

Sorolla: Mediterranean...

…Brightness

dimarts, 24 de febrer de 2009
'Sorolla. Vision of Spain'. That is the name of the exhibition currently showing at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) in Barcelona. The exhibition comprises panels painted by the Valencian artist Joaquim Sorolla Bastida (1863-1923) for the Hispanic Society of America.

First and foremost, it should be said that 'Sorolla. Vision of Spain' has already been described as the exhibition of the year on account of the vast number of people that have visited it: 900,000 counting visitors in Valencia, Seville, Malaga and Bilbao. Many more are expected to attend the exhibition judging by the long queues that were forming outside the MNAC last weekend.

In 1911, the erudite New York art patron Archer Milton Huntington commissioned Joaquim Sorolla to decorate the library at the Hispanic Society of America, New York (USA), an institution founded by Milton Huntington a number of years earlier, in 1904.

The result of the commission was a set of 14 huge panels painted in oil in which Sorolla reflected the geographic diversity of the Spanish state. The artist took eight years to complete the collection during which time he travelled continuously to different locations throughout the Peninsula, all the time taking notes and painting what he saw.

These 14 pieces that are part of the exhibition are completed by some 50 drawings that help visitors understand the creative process embarked on by Sorolla.

'Sorolla. Vision of Spain' is organised by Bancaixa in collaboration with the MNAC, where the exhibition can be seen free of charge until 3 May.

The Collection

+ 'Elche. The Palm Grove'.
The titles of the pieces exhibited are indicative of the geographic and thematic diversity embraced by Sorolla. Here are some of them: 'Andalusia. The Bullrun', 'Aragon. The Folk Dance', 'Castile. The Bread Party', 'Guipuzcoa. The Skittles', 'Galicia. The Procession', 'Valencia. The Haunches', 'Catalonia. The Fish', 'Extremadura. The Market', etc. This diversity does not stand in the way of one of the main features of Sorolla's work: the explosion of light and colour.

+ 'Catalonia. The Fish'.
Brightness is highly visible on the panels, for example, in the Mediterranean panels, focused on our geographic territory: 'Catalonia. The Fish', which uses shades of white and blue, very characteristic of Sorolla (the white of women's dresses and the blue of the sea in the background), 'Valencia. The Haunches', the work with the most cheerful colouring, perhaps on account of the fact that the scene is from the artist's home town, and 'Elche. The Palm Grove', featuring a dozen day labourer women sitting down and one day labourer man standing up harvesting dates.

…Brightness

+ 'The Young Amphibians' (1903).
In fact, Sorolla was very skilful at capturing the Mediterranean light, as his scenes at the beach show ('Boys on the Beach' for example). This ability to capture light and the representation of people in motion are the distinctive characteristics of Sorolla's work, which became known all over the world. For Sorolla, who was born into humble conditions, painting was a profession that enabled him to make a living and, unlike many other artists, there was nothing bohemian about his life at all.
