The Premier League, the Best League in the World

The Big Four: Liverpool, Manchester United...

...Arsenal and Chelsea

Rich Clubs

dimarts, 22 d'abril de 2008
Today's Champions League semi-final will be between two English clubs: Liverpool and Chelsea. Tomorrow will be the turn of Barcelona who will play another English side, Manchester United, seen by many as favourites to win the title, the most important in European club football.

The fact that three of the semi-finalists are English clubs is proof of the competitiveness of the Premier League (the English league), considered the best in the world, ahead of the Spanish and Italian leagues. Indicative of this is the fact that, for the last three years, the Champions League has had an English finalist. This year, it is possible that both finalists will be English. Only Barça can change that.

The domination of English clubs in Europe is, to a large extent, due to the quality of overseas players. (The England side, however, is not having much luck at the moment, and did not even qualify for the Euro 2008 finals.) Some of the best English clubs (Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, etc.) have been bought by multi-millionaire businessmen who have not been reticent in spending large amounts of money to sign the crème de la crème from world football.

The Premier League is made up of a number of legendary teams from European football, although four currently stand out clearly from the rest: the so-called 'big four': Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The Big Four: Liverpool, Manchester United...

+ Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.
Liverpool is one of the most legendary teams in European football, with 18 league titles and five Champions League titles (the last being three years ago, although it reached the final last year) to its name. The Reds (as the team is also known) have this year signed forward Fernando Torres who plays alongside midfielder Steven Gerrard, the team's captain. The Red Devils (Manchester United) come second after Liverpool in terms of titles: 16 league titles and two Champions League titles (the last of which was in 1999 in a final played at Barça's home ground, Camp Nou). The key players at Manchester United are Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, named the third-best player in the world by FIFA last year, behind Kaká and Leo Messi.

...Arsenal and Chelsea

+ Cesc Fàbregas signed for Arsenal in 2003.
The London club Arsenal plays a lively game based on ball possession directed by the former Barça junior Cesc Fàbregas. The club's trophy cabinet does not yet have a Champions League cup, neither does Chelsea's (also from London), despite expensive signings by the club's owner, the Russian multi-millionaire Roman Abramovich. But the club did win two consecutive league titles under José Mourinho (Chelsea's coach between 2004 and 2007) in 2005 and 2006. The team includes Didier Drogba, Andriy Shevchenko and Frank Lampard.

Rich Clubs

+ United are second richest club in the world.
According to Deloitte, the richest 20 clubs in the world include six Premier League teams: Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, in that order. Deloitte's rankings, based on sales during the 2006-2007 season, is headed by Real Madrid, followed by Manchester United and then Barça. Valencia is in 18th place.
