He is only 17 years and three months old, but he already has all the makings of a star player. His name is Bojan Krkic, he's a striker and, in the space of a few months, has become an idol and one of FC Barcelona's great hopes.

Learning the game in Barça's youth and B teams, which took him on when he was only 10 for the 1999-2000 season, Bojan's rise has been meteoric. He started off last season in the youth A team, before going on to play for Barça B. This year, on 24 April, he made his debut with the first team in a friendly against the Egyptian club Al-Ahly, when he scored a goal.

Bojan has only really come of age this season and he has already set two new records: youngest Barça player to score in a League match (scoring against Vila-real on 20 October) and youngest player to take to the field in a Champions League match: the highest level of European club football, breaking the record age of 17 years and 22 days in a match against Olympique Lionnais.

Proof of Bojan's exceptional talent is how he managed to find a place within a club full of star players, top internationals who have won just about everything. What's more, he has two qualities that are essential for success: the ability to work and humility.

The Gift of the Goal

+ Bojan is the youngest Barça player to score in a League match.

Born in 1990 at Linyola (Pla d'Urgell) to a Serbian father and a Catalan mother, Bojan Krkic Pérez is what is known as a natural goal scorer, as demonstrated by the hundreds of goals he scored in Barcelona's youth and B teams. Added to his scoring instinct are his dribbling skills and exceptional speed, qualities that allow him, with his relatively slight build, to slip past defenders. What's more, he has a great overall sense of the game, an important help for his team mates. Bojan's not one of those players who wait for the ball to come to them, he'll run half the length of the pitch to chase the ball and launch an attack.

Together with Mexican striker Giovani Dos Santos (who is just a year older), Bojan Krkic is the latest player to emerge from Barça's youth and B teams. In recent years, these Barça teams have turned out several top-rank players such as Carles Puyol, incombustible defender and team captain; Víctor Valdés, goalkeeper of great agility and competence; Leo Messi, who, despite not winning a single important cup with Barça last season, has just been judged the world's third-best player by prestigious soccer magazine France Football; Andrés Iniesta, who controls the ball like no other player and who can play in a number of different positions; and Cesc Fàbregas, the undisputed star of the London club Arsenal, one of the best teams of the moment.

Barça is not, by any stretch, a counter-attacking side. Quite the opposite, it's characterised by its possession of the ball and known for its short and precise passing, made possible by the technical skills of its players. In this sense, the 'organiser' plays an important role, keeping the play under control and using his judgement to distribute the ball around. Cesc and Iniesta fit the profile of the organiser, as does Xavi, the 'Brain of Barça', who succeeded the exquisite Josep Guardiola, one of the 'Dream Team' forwards who helped Barça win its first European Cup.

QUE HO SABIES?

As mentioned earlier, Bojan comes from Linyola, which is also the home town of Josep Maria Fusté, who played for Barça between 1962-1972, working his way up to captain of the team. Fusté has repeatedly praised the talent of the young striker.
When he was boy, Bojan looked up to Dutch striker Patrick Kluivert. Today, his role models include Carles Puyol, Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry, which whom he has stuck up good friendships.
