The Oscars 2007

And the Oscar goes to…

Favourite Actors

dijous, 22 de febrer de 2007
This Sunday, 25 February, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will award the Oscars, the most popular film awards in the world, first held in 1929. The lavish awards ceremony will be held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California, and will be hosted by the American actress and comedienne, Ellen DeGeneres.

The Oscars are awarded for various categories, the most popular of which is best picture. The five feature-length films nominated this year are: 'Babel', a film about difficulties in communication as seen in four interwoven storylines; 'The Departed', a detective thriller with an all-star cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson, among others. 'Letters from Iwo Jima', based on the battle of Iwo Jima during the Second World War; 'Little Miss Sunshine', an amusing and thought-provoking comedy about a rather outlandish family; and 'The Queen', about the British monarch's reaction to the death of Princess Diana.

Some curious aspects of these films are that 'Babel' was filmed in four languages and in four countries (Morocco, Japan, Mexico and the United States); that 'Letters from Iwo Jima', directed by Clint Eastwood, is in Japanese; and that 'Dreamgirls' has eight nominations (one more than Babel), although the nomination for best picture is not among them.

And the Oscar goes to…

+ Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt in 'Babel'.
Who will win the Oscar for best picture? As is to be expected, everyone has their own opinion and their own prediction. Be that as it may, the Golden Globe Awards, given out by foreign press working in Hollywood, are considered a good indicator of who might take away the coveted Oscar statuette, made of gold-plated britannium. This year, the Golden Globe Award for best motion picture was given to 'Babel', by the Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film's cast includes two world-renowned stars: Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett. Another possible winner is 'The Departed' by Martin Scorsese, himself a favourite in the category of best director.

Favourite Actors

+ Helen Mirren ('The Queen') and Forest Whitaker ('The Last King of Scotland').
Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet make up the list of candidates for the award of best actress in a leading role; most predictions point towards Helen Mirren, the English actress who gives a magnificent portrayal of Elizabeth II in 'The Queen'. Forest Whitaker (winner of this year's Golden Globe Award for best actor for his interpretation in 'The Last King of Scotland'), seems to have the best chances for winning this year's Oscar for best leading actor, although Leonardo DiCaprio ('Blood Diamond') and the veteran actor Peter O'Toole ('Venus') are also considered serious contenders for the award.

Records

+ Meryl Streep tops the list for most overall acting nominations.
Quite a few artists have been honoured time and time again by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in its eighty years of existence. The legendary Walt Disney, for example, had twenty-six awards bestowed upon him, including both statuettes and honorary awards. Meryl Streep tops the list for most overall acting nominations: fourteen, including this year's. Katharine Hepburn comes in second with twelve nominations, but with four Oscars for best actress she holds the award for most wins. Walter Brennan, Ingrid Bergman and Jack Nicholson have each won three Oscars. And then there have been three films to have been awarded eleven Oscars: 'Ben-Hur', 'Titanic' and 'The Lord of the Rings'.

QUE HO SABIES?

  • In 'Letters from Iwo Jima', Clint Eastwood uses the Japanese point of view to portray this infamous battle fought between the US and Japan; in 'Flags of Our Fathers', which was also released last year, he looks at the same battle, but from the American perspective.
  • 'Cars', 'Happy Feet' and 'Monster House' are in the line-up for best animated feature film.
  • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences originally had thirty-six members; now there are some six thousand members who decide the winners of the different categories.
