Today, 15 June, sees the opening of Sonar, the Barcelona International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art. For three days and nights, the Catalan capital will open its doors to the latest electronic music trends and a great variety of art and acts which are the main attractions in an event that is taking place for the 13th year running and which has become one of the top events of its kind in the world.

This year, Sonar will bring together more than 600 artists from 20 different countries and will offer some 300 activities. The festival's budget of €3.8 m gives an idea of the size of Sonar 2006, which is promoted by Advanced Music, the Centre for Contemporary Culture of Barcelona (CCCB), the Institute of Culture in Barcelona, with the support of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA).

As in previous years, the Festival will be divided into activities during the day (Sonar by Day) and activities at night (Sonar by Night). Sonar by Day will take place in the Raval district of Barcelona at the CCCB, MACBA, Plaça dels Àngels and the Santa Monica Art Centre. The venues for Sonar by Night will be the Montjuïc 2, on the edge of the neighbouring area of l'Hospitalet de Llobregat (in Barcelonès).
