On 25th March this year Catalonia was proclaimed world pitch and putt champion. Pitch and putt is a sport which is similar to golf, but with clear characteristics of its own. Catalonia beat another selection country, Andorra, in the final.

The second World Pitch and Putt Championships were held between 21th and 25th March at the Teià Municipal Sports Pitch in Maresme, in which a total of 13 teams took part. Catalonia and Andorra reached the final after beating the Netherlands and Ireland, respectively.

In addition, on 23th March –halfway through the Championships– the International Pitch and Putt Federation was established in the coastal village of Calella, also in Maresme. One of the 10 founder members of the Federation was the Catalan Pitch and Putt Federation, demonstrating that pitch and putt has attained certain recognition in this country. Andorra is expected soon to apply to join the Federation.

Alongside Andorra, the Catalan Pitch and Putt Federation is already a member of the European Pitch and Putt Association, the sport's governing body.

The Sport

+ The object of pitch and putt is to putt a ball into a sequence of holes.
The object of pitch and putt, like golf, is to putt a ball into a sequence of holes by means of a series of hits done with sticks called clubs. There are 18 holes altogether, at a distance of no more than 120 metres apart, making pitch and putt course much smaller than golf courses and, as a result, they require less water. (We shouldn't, however, confuse pitch and putt with what's known as minigolf which is played in a much smaller area.)

Characteristics

+ Pitch and putt course is much smaller than golf course.
The 18-hole playing area is no more than 1,200 metres long. Apart from the dimensions of the course, pitch and putt has other distinguishing features. For example, only three clubs can be used; the areas from where the first putt is done, or tee, are not grass but a synthetic material, and the handicap (established in order to even out differences in players' levels) is different from that in golf. The cost of playing the two sports is also different, with pitch and putt being considerably cheaper.

Titles

+ The second World Pitch and Putt Championships were held in Teià.
Developed in Ireland during the 1940s, pitch and putt has become firmly established in this country, a fact which is reflected in the titles which our teams have won in European and worldwide competitions. Catalonia has won both of the World Championships which have been held to date –beating Andorra this year and the Netherlands two years ago– and finished third in the last European Championships with Ireland again being the winner, as it has been on all four occasions the competition has been held.
