'The Chronicles of Narnia' is a literary saga for young readers, a fable which brings to life a fantastic and magical universe called Narnia, the product of the imagination of the Irish writer and university professor Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963).
From the publication of C. S. Lewis' 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' in 1950, which began the saga, Lewis has been held in high regard by both old and young from the English-speaking world, even more so following the recent release of the film based on the first of the books. The film, directed by the New Zealander Andrew Adamson and with spectacular special effects, lasts more than two hours. It has renewed interest in the mythical world of Narnia not just in English-speaking countries. Here, for example, there has been a notable increase in sales of those of the books which have been translated into Catalan. Apart from 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe', there are six other books which make up 'The Chronicles of Narnia': 'The Magician's Nephew', 'The Horse and His Boy', 'Prince Caspian', 'The Voyage of the Dawn Treader', 'The Silver Chair' and 'The Last Battle'.
'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe'Of the set, 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' is the most famous. The plot is as follows: four siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy, evacuated to the country during the Second World War (1939-1945), discover an enchanting and magical kingdom hidden behind the doors of a wardrobe: Narnia, home to centaurs, fauns and all manner of fantastic creatures. The four youngsters find their way into this icy world, condemned by the wicked White Witch to perpetual winter, and, there, join forces with a noble lion called Aslan to bring back spring, joy and peace.
C. S. LewisBorn in Belfast, C. S. Lewis was a professor at the prestigious universities of Oxford and Cambridge and author of some forty books, many of them religious or with religious references. In fact, C. S. Lewis was an adherent of Christianity to which he had become a convert in the early 1930s. Another noteworthy work from this prolifically imaginative author, apart from 'The Chronicles of Narnia', is the moral fable 'The Screwtape Letters'.
'The Chronicles of Narnia' and 'The Lord of the Rings'![]()
+ Portrait of J. R. R. Tolkien.
Some have highlighted the similarities between Narnia and the Middle Earth, where the action of 'The Lord of the Rings' takes place, by the English writer J. R. R. Tolkien: two fantasy worlds where a battle is fought between good and evil. The fact is that Lewis and Tolkien, both devout Christians, became friends at Oxford where they were part of a literary group known as The Inklings where they discussed each other's writing.
