Over the last year, major corporations working in the IT field have joined up to various initiatives to digitalise millions of books and make them accessible on the internet. The first of these projects came from Google, which in December 2004 launched Google Print, recently restarted after a break since mid-August.
Google Print aims to create a major virtual library by digitalising fifteen million books belonging to the US universities of Harvard, Stanford and Michigan, the New York Public Library and the University of Oxford in the UK, all institutions with which the US company has made agreements. As we said, there was a break in the project around three months ago, to give publishers time to notify Google which books they did not want digitalised. But this did not bring an end to the controversy created by Google Print: the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers, who represent US writers and publishers respectively, have both begun legal proceedings accusing Google of infringing the law on intellectual property. Given this situation, Google has announced that it will focus on reproducing books that are either public property or out of print. On the 3rd of November, Google Print was officially launched with the publication of its first books, including titles by the novelist Henry James and works on the North American Civil War (1861-1865).
Google's RivalsYahoo!, another web-based search engine, is also leading a project similar to Google's: the Open Content Alliance, which encompasses books and multimedia materials. The project was set up early this year and has recently been joined by Microsoft, the company headed by Bill Gates. As well as this, last week Microsoft reached an agreement with the British Library to scan up to one hundred thousand of volumes belonging to the institution, which owns one of the richest stocks in the world. This enterprise will be carried out next year.
A European Digital Library![]()
+ The digital libraries initiative aims at making European information resources easier.
All these initiatives bear a North American stamp, with some British participation. But now they have brought about a response on a European level. Early this year, a few lone voices were heard suggesting that the Google Print project had an excessively strong leaning towards the English language, and in April leaders from six European nations decided to create a digital library to represent the cultural and scientific heritage of Europe. This initiative was approved by the European Union, which will contribute by means of the project entitled i2010: digital libraries.
Books in Catalan on the InternetEven in our own country, there are initiatives afoot to digitalise books. One of the most important is the Biblioteca Virtual Joan Lluís Vives, created following an agreement between the University of Alicante and the Institut Joan Lluís Vives network of universities, which is working on the digital publication of the most representative works of Catalan culture. Phase One aims to include five hundred or so of the major titles of our cultural heritage prior to 1920. Another innovative project to be highlighted is that of the Biblioteca Electrònica of the Institut Ramon Llull, which aims to internationally disseminate Catalan literature over the internet with translations of works, initially into English.
