> The Agbar Tower: Traditional but Cutting-Edge > Jean Nouvel... > ...and his Work dimarts, 20 de setembre de 2005
The 16th of September was the official opening day of the Agbar Tower, the newest architectural icon of Barcelona and the spectacular gateway to the 22@ technology district. The building is the third tallest in the city, the work of the French architect Jean Nouvel and the Barcelona architecture studio b720.
The Agbar Tower is located at the spot where the Plaça de les Glòries meets the Avinguda Diagonal. It is one hundred and forty-two metres tall and has a surface area of over fifty-thousand square metres, combining materials such as concrete, steel and glass. Its cylindrical shape and domed roof give it a very light and airy interior, as does the absence of pillars. One of the most visually impressive aspects of this skyscraper is its nocturnal lighting, which has a combination of colours that allows it to further brighten and tower over the surrounding area. The Agbar Tower has thirty four storeys and is the new headquarters of the Agbar Group. Around six hundred employees of the company have already been working there since July. The real estate firm Layetana, developer of the building, has invested one hundred and thirty-two million euros in its construction.
The Agbar Tower: Traditional but Cutting-EdgeThe Agbar Tower has been described as a synthesis between the traditional and the modern. On the one hand, the building rises like a geyser evoking the work of Antoni Gaudí (the most internationally renowned of all the Catalan modernist architects), the strange shapes of the Montserrat massif and the blue of the Mediterranean. On the other hand, the design is totally innovative and is a match for modern-day society's concern for the environment. One example: the four thousand five hundred windows allow for optimum use of sunlight, which naturally helps to reduce the use of other energy sources.
Jean Nouvel...Jean Nouvel is one of the most renowned architects in the world. Born in 1945 in the French town of Fumel, he attained his architecture degree in 1972, and four years later he helped to found the French architectural movement known as Mars 1976. With a reputation for being a transgressor, Nouvel's career has won him various awards such as the Gold Medal of the French Academy of Architecture and the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale.
...and his WorkJean Nouvel's architectural footprint is present in many areas of the world, although it is most frequently found in Europe. Among his many works, we can highlight, as well as the brand-new Agbar Tower, the Institute of the Arab World and the Cartier Foundation, both in Paris, the renovation of the Lyon Opera House, the Tours Conference Centre, the Lucerne Arts and Conference Centre, the Galeries Lafayette in Berlin, the Andel building in Prague, and so on.
