Montblanc Relives its Medieval Past

Montblanc and the Catalan Parliament Assembly

The Legend of Saint George

Minstrels

dijous, 21 d'abril de 2005
From the 22nd of April to the 1st of May, Montblanc will be changing its appearance and delving into medieval legends, traditions and history. The Montblanc Medieval Week, also known as the Medieval Week of the Legend of Saint George, is celebrating its eighteenth year and includes a whole range of activities for young and old, which will take place in an ideal location: a walled town that has preserved its medieval feel and past in its archways, churches, squares and streets.

Most of the activities fall on the two weekends of the event: the medieval supper, the correfoc ('fire run'), the Medieval market, the exhibition of trades and cooking, children's' games, street parades, theatre shows, concerts...

But the main event of the Montblanc Medieval Week will take place on the evening of the 23rd of April: a performance of the legend of Sant Jordi, an amazing show featuring over two hundred actors.

Another notable event will be the staging of the Catalan Parliament Assembly held at Montblanc in 1307, which will take place on the 1st of May at Sant Miquel church, where it was actually held all that time ago. This representation will allow the visitor to go back to the origins of the Catalan treaty movement or parliamentarism, which is described below.

Montblanc and the Catalan Parliament Assembly

+ The parliament assembly held in 1307 is staged during Medieval Week.
Although the Catalan Parliament Assembly has its origins in the 11th century, it was not fully developed until the end of the 13th century, under the reign of the Catalan King Peter the Great (1276-1285). The assembly brought together the king and the social elite, in other words, the nobility, the church and the urban bourgeoisie. The proceedings were as follows: the monarch, often in need of cash, asked for money from those present, who were the ones that actually had any. But they were often only willing to give him some if the king agreed to their requests. There would then be a bit of give and take until they reached an agreement that was satisfactory to both parties. Four of these assemblies were held at Montblanc, in the years 1307, 1333, 1370 and 1414.

The Legend of Saint George

+ Catalan popular tradition locates the legend of Saint George in Montblanc.
Catalan popular tradition locates the legend of Saint George, patron saint of the Principality of Catalonia, in the vicinity of the town of Montblanc. It is said that a long, long time ago, a terrifying monster used to prowl near the town. It was always hungry and used to cause havoc with the livestock in the area. But still it was not satisfied, and the townspeople just did not know what to do to be free of it. In the end, they agreed to give it a maiden every day as food. One day, it was the turn of the king's daughter to be sacrificed to the monster. The girl left in search of the dragon, and on her way she came across a knight, Saint George, who set her free after wounding the beast which he tied up and which was then killed by the townspeople. From the blood spilt by the beast, a rosebush grew and Saint George, plucking the reddest rose, gave it to the brave and beautiful princess.

Minstrels

+ Minstrels were a very characteristic figure of the Middle Ages.
The Montblanc Medieval Week could not be without its minstrels who, on the 30th of April, will provide entertainment and attempt to win the audience's favour in the 3rd Competition of Minstrels. Minstrels were a very characteristic figure of the Middle Ages. They told stories and recited literary works written by poets and troubadours, often to musical accompaniment. Minstrels used to fill the squares, streets and palaces with people, and they became oral conveyors of culture, at a time at which most people were illiterate.

QUE HO SABIES?

  • Legend has it that the patron saint of the Principality of Catalonia defeated the dragon in front of the turreted gateway known as Sant Jordi, or Saint George's, in the fortified walls of Montblanc; this is illustrated on the commemorative mosaic plaque located there.
  • The walls of Montblanc, built in the 14th century, are one of the best preserved in our country. They are 1,500 metres in perimeter and include around thirty turrets.
  • The first parliament assembly held at Montblanc, in 1307, which will be restaged during Medieval Week, was summoned by King James II of Catalonia-Aragon, otherwise known as James the Just. He called the meeting to obtain funding for the conquest of the island of Sardinia, an objective which, in the end, was achieved.
