> The Novel by H. G. Wells > Wells, Writer and Social Reformer > An Adaptation that Produced Panic dilluns, 27 de juny de 2005
The 29th of June is the World opening of 'War of the Worlds', a science-fiction movie inspired by the novel of the same name written by Herbert George Wells and published in 1898. Directed by the American cinematographer Steven Spielberg, 'The War of the Worlds' stars actor Tom Cruise.
The film also features other well-known actors, such as Tim Robbins, and it has all the ingredients to become one of this summer's major cinematic events. It is the second collaboration between Spielberg and Cruise, the first being 'Minority Report' (2002). In 'War of the Worlds', which is replete with special effects, Tom Cruise plays the part of Ray Ferrier, a working-class US citizen who lives in New Jersey and struggles to save the lives of his children and his own in the midst of a totally unexpected event: the invasion of Earth by extraterrestrials, a devastating invasion that presents a threat to the survival of the human race.
The Novel by H. G. Wells
+ 'The War of the Worlds' was published in 1898.
We mentioned above that Spielberg's film is inspired by the novel by the English writer H. G. Wells (1866-1946), who located the Martian invasion in Southern England. 'The War of the Worlds' was written at a time when the West was racing to colonise a part of the planet, especially Africa, by exploiting its scientific and technological superiority. In this context, the extraterrestrial invasion described in Wells' novel has been seen as a criticism of Western colonialism, which aimed to impose its own view of the world on the colonised peoples.
Wells, Writer and Social ReformerH. G. Wells is rightly considered one of the pioneers of science fiction literature, with masterpieces of the genre such as 'The Time Machine' (1895), 'The Island of Doctor Moreau' (1896), 'The Invisible Man' (1897) and, of course, 'The War of the Worlds'. Although these novels were written at a time of great confidence in human progress, the fact is that one can glimpse a certain pessimism about the future, which became stronger in the later books, mostly due to the tragedy of the First World War (1914-1918). As well as these novels, Wells wrote historical works and texts relating to the social issues of the day. Wells came from a very modest background and he became a social reformer, working for a much fairer world than the one he was destined to live in.
An Adaptation that Produced PanicOn the night before Halloween of the year 1938, forty years after the publication of 'The War of the Worlds', Orson Welles, who was to become one of the great figures of the history of cinema, adapted the novel into a radio play, in which the Martians invaded New Jersey. Welles' adaptation was so realistic that many listeners took the story to be true, which unleashed a wave of panic throughout the East Coast of the United States: people shut themselves in their homes or began fleeing, totally terrified.
