... and Gradual Consolidation of Jazz

A New Generation of Jazz Artists

dijous, 9 de juny de 2005
For the whole of the month of June, the Ciutat Vella Festival of Creative Music and Jazz is being held in Barcelona for the sixteenth year. The event has the participation of three hundred performers and includes one hundred and fifty concerts. It provides us with the opportunity of discussing the subject of jazz and, in particular, the historical evolution of this musical genre in the Catalan-speaking lands.

Throughout its more than one hundred years of history, jazz has given rise to various different styles and variations, such as swing, bop, cool, free jazz, jazz-rock, and so on, as well as giving us world famous names, of both musicians and singers: Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, and the list goes on.

As far as the origins of jazz are concerned, they can be traced back to the turn of the 20th century in the US city of New Orleans (Louisiana), when different elements and musical precedents were mixed, such as blues, ragtime and minstrel show.

This new form of music was closely linked to the Afro-American community and based on improvisation, and it spread to other US cities such as Chicago and New York. Because of record production and radio broadcasting, it left the US borders and began to penetrate Europe.

Introduction...

+ The Barcelona Hot Club brought world-famous jazz artists to the city.
Jazz began to make its way into our country in the 1920s and especially the 30s, after the opening of the Hot Club in Barcelona in 1935. This jazz-lovers' club was to bring world-famous jazz artists to Barcelona. The Barcelona Hot Club was founded at a time when there was a proliferation of jazz enthusiasts in many Catalan towns and cities. Having said that, it should be pointed out that, at that time, jazz did not attain the same prestige in the Catalan-speaking lands as it did in other parts of Europe, such as France.

... and Gradual Consolidation of Jazz

+ The pianist Tete Montoliu attained international fame.
Despite the mistrust shown by Franco's dictatorship toward jazz, in the second half of the 20th century, the number of jazz fans progressively grew, thanks in part to the appeal of the pianist Tete Montoliu, who was blind from birth and attained international fame, and to the opening of venues such as Jamboree in Barcelona and Jazz Cava in Terrassa, two cities that have pioneered jazz in our country and that both hold jazz festivals.

A New Generation of Jazz Artists

+ Catalan jazz is currently enjoying a boom.
Over the last twenty years, a new generation of jazz musicians has appeared who are all in close contact with trends and composers from the other side of the Atlantic. The drummers Jordi Rossy, Marc Miralta and David Xirgu, saxophonists Perico Sambeat and Llibert Fortuny, double bass player David Mengual, vocalist Carme Canela... these are some of the names that go to prove that Catalan jazz is currently enjoying a boom.
