Barcelona Airport, recognized as the best in southern of Europe by air travelers

For the third time, Barcelona El Prat has been recognized as the best airport in southern Europe at the World Airport Awards 2014. The awards, given by Skytrax, are the result of the assessment of almost 13 million passengers from 110 different countries, and involved 410 airports all over the world. In the global ranking, Barcelona holds the 38th position. In 2013, Barcelona El Prat Airport registered a record in the number of travelers, with 35.2 million passengers, and in August had more travelers than any other airport in the Spanish State.

The World Airport Awards is an independent study based on the largest annual global airport customer satisfaction survey, this year with 12.85 million customers. The questionnaire evaluates passenger satisfaction for airport service and products across 39 indicators, including check-in, arrivals, transfers, shopping, security and immigration or departure at the gate.

The prize was given at a reception in Barcelona during the “Passenger Terminal EXPO”, held in the Catalan capital at the end of March. In the southern Europe category, Barcelona is followed by Istanbul Atatürk Airport, in Turkey; and the third position is for Madrid Barajas Airport. Furthermore, Barcelona El Prat is in 7th position in the “World’s best airport serving 30-40 million passengers” category.

In the global category, Changi Airport in Singapore was voted the World’s Best Airport for the second year in a row. Seoul’s Incheon International Airport is next on the list, and the third one is also the first in Europe, Munich Airport. On this list, Barcelona Airport is in 38th position of the 410 airports evaluated.

Good numbers for the Catalan airport

In 2013, the Airport of Barcelona El Prat registered a record in the number of travelers, with 35.2 million passengers in 12 months, a rise of 0.2% from 2012. In addition, for the first time in August, the Airport of Barcelona had a larger number of air travelers than Barajas, in Madrid. The Airport of Madrid is still the biggest in Spain in the total number of passengers (39.7 millions), but with has fallen more than 10% since 2012.
