One of the objectives of the MobileReady App is to highlight experiences throughout Barcelona that take advantage of mobile technology. In the Experiences section of the app, there’s a short description of the Augmented Reality tour offered at Gaudí’s Casa Batlló. It’s well worth a visit.

Antoni Gaudí’s spectactular Casa Batlló has already been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and one of the Seven Wonders of the Cultural Heritage of Catalonia. It is a truly spectactular building with a mosaic façade, spectactular roof line, stained glass, and very special wooden floors and doors.

But what did it look like when the Batlló family lived there? This is where the augmented reality tour comes in. In each room, you can hold the tablet up to different areas of the room to see a representation of the furniture, rugs, window dressings, and more that belonged in the home.

For example, in the front room, with the wavy stained glass windows that look out onto Passeig de Gràcia, hold up the tablet to see the sofa and chairs that the Batlló family sat in.

In the dining room, you can see the table set for dinner. If you point the tablet up at the vents, you can see a video of one of the innovative features that Gaudí added to this house at the turn of the 20th century: the vents open to give better circulation to the room.

In the entry hall, if you point the tablet toward the skylights, you see them turn into flying turtles—evoked by the shapes of the windows.

It’s a brilliantly executed interesting tour that will keep grownups and kids searching around the house for clues about how the house was used in the early 1900’s.
