A pair of Civil Guard agents made an appearance in the middle of the day today in the Plaça de la Vila in Sant Celoni, and surrounded by the bustle of a Saturday crowd of people, started pointed at buildings and balconies with independence flags hanging from them, taking notes. That’s what the local chapter of the Catalan National Assembly in Sant Celoni said and which was corroborated by several residents of the square who saw the agents and who explained it through social media and directly to VilaWeb.

The reaction on Twitter was immediate, and hundreds of people have responded to the agents’ actions with the hashtag #GuardiaCivilTincEstelada, which means ‘Civil Guard, I have a Catalan Independence Flag’, which quickly became a trending topic in Spain.

The official Catalan flag has four red stripes on a yellow background. The independence flag has either a blue or yellow triangle at one end with a white or red star, respectively.

And this is the story that one of the witnesses told VilaWeb: ‘Two agents of the Civil Guard came into the plaza, and in front of everyone, started looking at the different buildings and pointing their fingers, counting independence flags and taking notes in a notebook.’

One of the residents got closer to the agents and took pictures of them with his mobile phone. The agents went over to him and asked for his identification, but since he wasn’t carrying any at that moment, they took him to the police station. There, the local officers recognized him right away and told the pair of Civil Guards who he was. This resident said he was flabbergasted that the two agents of the Civil Guard, in the middle of the afternoon on a Saturday, with all of the people that were in the square, started pointing at and taking notes about who had independence flags hanging from their balconies.
