NBA player Marc Gasol declared his support for the referendum on secession from Spain planned for 9 November. Asked for his views on the independence vote at a luncheon hosted yesterday by the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, the Memphis Grizzlies defensive player said: ‘Personally, I am in favour of the vote’. His brother and fellow NBA player Pau Gasol, also present at the event, declined to answer the question at the time but did so a while later. In an interviewed for 8TV’s news show ‘8 al Dia’, he said: ‘Everyone has the right to decide, everyone has the right to express themselves’.

This is not the first time Marc Gasol has taken a stand in favour of the referendum. In an appearance last December on TV3’s show ‘El Convidat’, he said that ‘people should have the power to decide’.

Other athletes have also weighed in on the issue. Yesterday, FC Barcelona player Xavi Hernandez said after the Champions League match: We have the right to vote. We need to vote, we need people opinion and I support the consulation vote, of course.

His teammate Gerard Piqué also came out in support of the independence vote: ‘I support the referendum, which I think is the most democratic option, and I think it must happen, because in the end people have the right to vote on this’. Piqué added that he had attended the massive pro-independence rally that formed a giant V along two of Barcelona’s main avenues on 11 September, Catalonia’s National Day. ‘I took part in La Diada (National Day) because I am Catalan and it was Catalonia’s day of celebration. I went with my loved ones, I enjoyed the day and I had fun. It was a remarkable day for the amount of people that participated and for the festive atmosphere’.
