Josep Antoni Duran i Lleida, president of the Governing Committee of Unió Democràtica de Catalunya (UDC), the governing CiU coalition’s junior partner to Convergència Democràtica de Catalunya (CDC), will take advantage of the coalition’s National Executive Committee meeting today to resign his position as General Secretary of the CiU coalition. Tomorrow, Ramon Espadaler—president of the Executive Board of UDC and Minister of the Interior—will be named as his successor. Duran weighed this decision over the past few weeks together with the Catalan Government President, Artur Mas. Nevertheless, Duran will continue to lead Unió Democràtica and to serve as CiU’s spokesperson in the Spanish Congress.

After the European elections, Duran revealed that he had opened a “period of reflection” about continuing as CiU’s General Secretary but said that he wouldn’t make a final decision without consulting with Artur Mas.

At first, some members of CDC questioned whether Duran should continue as the coalition’s spokesperson in Madrid, but the controversy calmed down when Duran reaffirmed his commitment to holding the November 9th referendum on independence.

In one of his last public speeches, at Unió’s Summer School, he spoke in favor of recovering the center political space in Catalonia.
