Westminister’s research team has prepared a document to explain Catalonia’s current political context to members of Parliament. The document contains seven pages that go over the current events and explains that even though the Catalan Parliament has made a formal petition to hold a referendum on independence, Madrid will not allow it.

The International Affairs section of the British Parliament Library published the text on Friday. It’s a type of document that members of Parliament receive to help them develop their positions on various matters before them.

The text goes back to 2010, with the whittling down of the Catalan Statute of Autonomy and the elections, in order to explain how the current state of affairs has come about. In the article’s summary, the document notes that a majority of the Catalan Parliament is in favor of secession. It also includes the results of recent polls and explains that the majority of the Catalan people are in favor of continuing within the European Union if independence is achieved.
