The president of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, appeared before the media in an emergency press conference today at Moncloa Palace to announce the abdication of Juan Carlos I, after a thirty-nine year reign: “Juan Carlos has told me of his desire to abdicate the throne and open up the succession process.”

The king, added Rajoy, will explain his motives today himself at midday, in a message to be broadcast via radio and TV. “I find the king is convinced that this is the best moment to make a change in the head of state and to pass the crown to the Prince of Asturias.”

Rajoy said that he would call for a emergency meeting of the council of ministers on Tuesday, to fulfill the constitutional previsions in this area: ” I hope that in a short time frame the Spanish Courts will proclaim as new King of Spain the man who today is Prince of Asturias [the king’s son, Felipe].”

Today was the first time the president of the Spanish Government has made an institutional declaration to the press since he took office.
