Joan Colomo, Alberto Montero and the band Anímic are playing on the same day, Saturday 3rd May, at one of the main musical events of the United Kingdom, especially combining international artists with musical cinema and digital arts. The Catalan artists will be playing at a festival gathering more than 40,000 punters and 3,000 professionals, which takes place from the 1st to the 3rd of May in different Liverpool venues. The Sound City Festival is a must-go event to discover new pop and rock talents, among which are the 3 Catalan representatives. The first is the singer and song-writer Joan Colomo, who will be presenting his latest album ‘La fília i la fòbia’ (‘The liking and the phobia’), at The Brink at 10 pm. The second is Valencia-born composer Alberto Montero, who will play parts of his ‘Puerto Príncipe’ album, which has jazz, psychedelia and Latino vibes influences, at the Heebie Jeebies at 7 pm. Finally, the last Catalan band is Anímic, who have opened concerts for Portishead and These New Puritans, among others. They will show his latest work ‘Hannibal’, combining heavy and electronic rhythms, at the Brooklyn Mixer at 7.15 pm,.
Between the 1st and the 3rd of May Liverpool becomes one of the main musical platforms in the United Kingdom. The city hosts more than 360 bands in 25 different venues, as well as improvised open-air movie theatres. The 2014 Sound City Festival’s line-up includes three Catalan representatives, who are participating in the event thanks to the support of the Institut Ramon Llull, the public body promoting Catalan culture and language abroad.
Perhaps the most popular one in Catalonia is the singer-songwirter Joan Colomo, who will be playing at The Brink at 10 pm. The festival website says “there is no half heartedness or greys here, there’s no place for luke-warmness: just Love and pain, friends and enemies, the end of the world and the joy of living” about Colomo’s latest work. Guitars, synthesizers, people shouting, distortion, electronic sounds and keyboards are some of the instruments and sound elements used.
Anímic are also especially famous thanks to their fifth album: ‘Hannibal’. They have toured with Will Johnson (Centromatic) and the have opened concerts for bands such as Portishead, These New Puritans, Clem Snide and Megafaun. They combine heavy and electronic music, from slowcore to pop. Their latest album put them among the top positions in musical rankings, such as that of the prestigious music magazine ‘Rockdelux’. They will be playing at 7.15 pm at the Brooklyn Mixer.
Finally, the last one is Alberto Montero, who mixes different music styles in his latest album ‘Puerto Príncipe’, the city giving its name to the Street in Barcelona where he has been living for the past few years. Montero is a talented instrumentalist who combines Latino rhythms, jazz and psychedelia in the work he will be performing on Saturday at 7 pm at the Heebie Jeebie.
