“We will not accept the word ‘resignation’,” declared Jordi Turull (CiU), the first of the three Catalan Parliament members to speak before the Spanish Congress in defense of the referendum. And he added, “The people of Catalonia have embarked on a path of no return … Great decisions must be made by voting. The ballot boxes are the only method of knowing exactly what the Catalans want. It is legal and it is possible.” Turull justified the need of holding a referendum because, “there is a feeling of fatigue, of having tried everything to fit in”.

Turull invited the Spanish Government to allow the referendum. “The errors accumulated throughout history by the State toward Catalonia can be remedied,” he said. But he warned, “Regardless, we will not give up. We will promote other ways of letting the citizens of Catalonia vote so they can decide on their own future. Let no one be deceived: the people of Catalonia are not on a dead end street, they have embarked on a path of no return.”
